We’ve all heard our parents and health professionals drone on about how breakfast is the most important meal of the day: it kick starts your metabolism, stops you snacking and generally sets you up for the day; Studies back this up, yes?

New research by the UK’s National Obesity Observatory suggests that “it is not clear whether there is a causal relationship with Body Mass Index (weight) or whether breakfast is merely a marker for other lifestyle factors that can contribute to healthy body weight…Eating breakfast is likely to be of nutritional benefit and should be encouraged as part of an overall lifestyle strategy that includes a healthy diet and regular physical activity.”

A study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that, based on 300 individuals assessed, skipping breakfast did not contribute to weight gain.

Prof David Allison, who conducted this trial stated: “There was absolutely no difference whatsoever in the amount of weight-loss…with respect to weight, at least in adults, it looks like we’re leaning towards it [breakfast] being a myth.”
