Johnny Depp spent $3 million to blast Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes out of a cannon

Earlier this month, Johnny Depp sued his former business representatives, The Management Group. In the suit, he alleged that TMG had collected $28 million in contingent fees he never agreed to and acted in ways that were otherwise financially irresponsible. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, TMG recently hit back with their own countersuit in which they assert that Depp is responsible for his own damn financial problems.

“Depp lived an ultra-extravagant lifestyle that often knowingly cost Depp in excess of $2 million per month [Ed. note: Wow!] to maintain, which he simply could not afford,” TMG’s attorney Michael Kump wrote in the cross-complaint. “Depp, and Depp alone, is fully responsible for any financial turmoil he finds himself in today.”

So, you might be asking: How on earth could somebody consistently spend $2 million a month? Sure, there’s the $75 million spent on 14 residences, the $18 million spent on a yacht, and the relatively paltry $30,000 spent on fine wines, but it turns out that Depp also found a much, much more creative way to burn through his bank account.

As the cross-complaint notes, presumably without any trace of irony, “Depp also paid over $3 million to blast from a specially-made cannon the ashes of author Hunter Thompson over Aspen, Colorado.” In fact, there’s even video to prove it:

We have to hand it to Depp: That is a pretty Hunter S. Thompsonesque way to waste a few million dollars. If only he had been half as creative in his accounting, then he might not be on the hook to pay TMG the $4.2 million he allegedly owes them.

Oh well, Johnny. You’ve always got those silly Dior commercials to fall back on.
