3 days, seventy-two hours, 4,320 minutes – that’s how long it’s been since last weekend. It’s Thursday which means it’s that time of the week when we give you the low-down on the hottest music, events, gigs and festivities that you really should check out (and we do it before anyone else).


* Friday 24th – Jerry Fish – Roisin Dubh – Tickets: €18-€20

He’s got a career that has spanned 2 decades, as well as a huge catalogue of hits. This Friday the Emotional Fish himself plays downstairs in the Roisin Dubh .

* Friday 24th – Sunday 26th – Sligo Jazz Project – Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo – Tickets: €18-€15

The West’s biggest jazz festival finishes up this weekend. Pianist Liane Carroll (Friday) and the SJP All Stars (Saturday) will close the festivities in style. The Sligo Jazz fest has been running since Tuesday (21st) and by all accounts it’s been amazing.

* Sunday 26th – Mick Flannery – Roisin Dubh – Tickets: €24-€26

The gorgeous Mick Flannery returns to the Roisin Dubh on Sunday to help close the Galway International Arts Festival. He’s an evocative wordsmith and pretty damn good with a guitar. Don’t miss Mick’s understated, beautiful stage style.


23rd-26th – The Vodafone Comedy Festival – Iveagh Gardens – Tickets: €20-€30


Get ready for Tommy Tiernan, Deirdre O’Kane, Al Porter and many more hilarious boys and girls from the Irish and international comedy scene. The Vodafone Comedy Festival runs from today (23rd) until Sunday (26th) in the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin.

* Saturday 25th – WGAvin James – Whelan’s, Dublin

Some lad called Ed Sheeran (never heard of him) once voiced his sterling support for singer/songwriter Gavin James (never heard of him either!)

James launches his E.P in Whelan’s at 2pm on Staurday, after his support gig for Ed’s sold out gig on Friday night. A wristband for the launch can be obtained by pre-ordering the ‘For You’ EP from the Warner Music Ireland Shop.

Based in Portumna, Galway, Big Generator are a 4-piece rock band who have seen unbridled success, playing venues the length and breadth of the country. For a very reasonable €5, check out these guys, kicking off at 10pm.

Curated by Central Arts & funded by Waterford Council, ArtBeat is a free open air music festival in the Viking Triangle every Saturday of the Summer. Collides, Youth Mass and Skelp perform this time round.
