The Weeknd has burst onto the scene recently, with ultra-slick vocals, smooth beats, and a chocolate, velvety flow. The Weeknd, (*week ending 20/9/15), currently boasts two tracks in the top three of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart – quite a spectacular feat for a relative unknown. So, what is all the fuss about?
The Weeknd has risen to prominence slowly but surely. He began his career in 2010 in Canada, and like many acts, needed time to develop before he perfected his craft. Born in Canada to Ethiopian parents, The Weeknd started churning out musical ideas with producers in Canada back in 2010 and 2011. Online attention to his collaborations, and a recommendation received from Drake, started to draw attention to his music.
His career has been on the up and up since then, culminating in an explosion onto the scene late this year. He cites his musical inspirations as Michael Jackson and Prince, and his sense of style has been critically acclaimed far and wide.
His songs, ‘Cant feel my face’, and ‘The Hills’, are currently at No.1 and No.2 on the Billboard Top 100 chart respectively. Have a listen to them here, and let us know your opinion below:
