Ane Brun has shared the official video for her new single ‘Shape of a Heart’, taken from her forthcoming album, ‘When I’m Free’.
‘Shape of a Heart’ is available as a digital single via Brun’s label, Balloon Ranger, while her sixth studio album, ‘When I’m Free’, will be released on September 4th as a CD, LP and digital download. It features the earlier single‘Directions’.
‘Shape of a heart’ displays Brun’s trademark emotional articulacy, as well as her masterful way with a melody and a love for what she calls, “the tonality of Middle Eastern music”. In a departure from her usual method of writing with piano and guitar, the song – like a number of tracks on the new album – was originally built around a rhythm and bass arrangement that Brun sketched out on computer software.
The track comes with two bonus remixes. La Fleur – the Swedish producer and DJ who’s currently a resident at the legendary Watergate club in Berlin boosts the BPMs to underline the song’s eastern flavours, while Stockholm’s Dante (Kinnunen, drummer for The Concretes) provides a more summery reading with bonus, tropicalia. The remixes come in the wake of Brun’s recent success with Dr. Kucho! & Gregor Salto featuring Ane Brun ‘Can’t Stop Playing (Makes Me High)’, which was a UK TOP 5 HIT (and Dance Chart No. 1), and which Brun also co-wrote.
‘When I’m Free’ finds Brun employing new techniques to forge songs that she resolved would feature more rhythm and brass within the same, intimate, warm sound she’s always constructed. Where 2008’s Changing Of The Seasons looked to Bonnie Prince Billy’s The Letting Go, and 2012’s It All Starts With One was inspired by the likes of Ray Lamontagne, Nina Simone, and Madonna’s Ray Of Light, ‘When I’m Free’ looks back joyfully to some of the sounds that shaped Brun’s youth: DJ Shadow, Charles Mingus and Lauryn Hill, indications of the versatile musical taste she’s displayed since she was a child.
Its genesis lies in Brun’s enforced cancellation in late 2012 of a North American tour with Peter Gabriel. Whereas she had previously struggled occasionally with her health concerns, letting them weigh her down, this time she had an epiphany. “One night,” she recalls, “I woke up and thought, ‘Why are you so afraid? It doesn’t help you in any way. Let your mind and body rest so it can heal.’ When I recovered, I experienced an almost bliss-like feeling. I’d replaced all the worrying and fear with gratitude, and the feeling lingered. So somehow, since 2012, I’ve been able to approach life very differently than before.”
Born of confusion and yet reveling in clear-headedness, ‘When I’m Free’ represents further musical progression from her early, acoustic songwriting, with Brun sounding more spontaneous and full of life than ever, her growing confidence in her pure-as-a-bell voice and her ever-ripening songwriting taking her to places that will astonish those who still think of her as a delicate troubadour.
On December 7th, the double platinum selling and multi-award winning Norwegian will return to Vicar Street in Dublin for what will be the final date on her forthcoming European tour. Tickets now on sale: €24 + booking fee tel: 0818 719 300 www.ticketmaster.ie.
